Why did Jerricho Cotchery Come Back?
Veteran wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery explains why he decided to come back to the Steelers this season in an interview with Joe Starkey of Seibel, Starkey and Miller on Sportsradio 93-7 The FAN. According to Cotchery, the Steelers have a great organization and was something he wanted to be a part of.
“The decision wasn’t tough. This was the place I wanted to be. After experiencing this atmosphere last season, it’s something I wanted to come back to. They wanted me back here, and the feeling was mutual.”
Cotchery also praised the “great atmosphere” in Pittsburgh “where everybody is upfront and honset with you. You know what everyone expects of you and you know what your role is.” He also cited their “positive environment” and very welcoming attitude of the players as another reason he wanted to come back.
When asked about his role in the team, Cotchery said that his 9 years experience in football as well as his life experience makes him a veteran in the group and he is open to offering advice to the young players.
Cotchery also discussed the new playbook and Ben’s reaction to it behind the scenes. He says that for him, it was a lot easier to learn the new playbook since he is relatively new to the team, but for players who’ve been with the Steelers for a while, it might be harder to adjust to a new system.
He also agrees with Ben Roethlisberger that 90% of the playbook is new, but that it was not hard for him to learn since a lot of it is similar to things he’s done in the past. As for Ben’s reaction, Cotchery says that he and the other players are not worried.
“Ben is a pro. He’s studying hard, trying to get this system down. He’ll be ready to lead us, so we’re not worried. He’s a smart guy…he’s embracing it.”
Cotchery also remarks on the passing of Junior Seau and the suspension of the New Orleans Saints players in Bountygate. Listen to the full interview here.
